TEACHERS’ CREATIVITY IN WORKING WITH STUDENTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

Abstract: Creativity is the development of new and useful ideas. It is also seen as an innate talent, a gift, a construct of the imagination or a person’s ability to find new solutions in certain situations. Educational work can be carried out in many areas through creative design of lessons, designing problem situations and discovery learning. The predominant characteristics of a creative teacher are imagination, motivation, a supportive and open relationship with the students and originality in the work. A creative teacher encourages students in many ways to be active and independent in solving problems. Creativity is especially important when working with students with developmental disabilities because the teacher is often in situations that require the application of new strategies and the rapid development of ways to achieve the intended educational goals.

The aim of this paper is to emphasise the importance of teachers’ creativity when working with students with developmental disabilities. It analyses studies that address teachers’ creativity when working with students with developmental disabilities and ways to foster creativity in students.

Creativity can significantly influence teachers’ self-confidence and sense of self-efficacy in planning, organising and implementing educational work with students with developmental disabilities.

Keywords: creativity, teachers, students with developmental disabilities.
