TIMSS 2023 – COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ENVIROMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY TEACHING IN THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS OF FORMER YUGOSLAVIA
Abstract. In this paper, we compare the educational systems of the former Yugoslav countries, that participated in the international study TIMSS 2023. We investigate Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and North Macedonia, in terms of teaching environmental sustainability in lower grades of primary school. This research is based on the results and data obtained from the TIMSS 2023 study. We examine students’ environmental attitudes and behaviours, as well as how teaching of environmental sustainability shapes students and what results it produces in different education systems. We also analyse how often teachers conduct activities on the topic of the perception of the importance of environmental sustainability, and we deal with the connection between teaching practices and students’ attitudes and behaviours towards the environment. Our research included627 schools, 17116 students,49,80% of them were female, 50,20% male. Our teacher’s sample was 1.211science teachers, 83,2% were female, 16.8% were male, 84,2% of teachers were between 30 and60years.
Keywords: TIMSS 2023, environmental sustainability, teaching quality.
